What is Gastric Sleeve?
- Other names of the surgery are vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), tube gastrectomy, and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy
- It involves removal of up to 85% of the stomach to significantly limit the patient’s food intake
- Sleeve gastrectomy vs. lap band surgery:
- Non-reversible vs. reversible
- Reduction of stomach capacity vs. placement of a ring along the stomach’s top portion
- The patient’s recovery is slower with gastric sleeve
- Gastric sleeve results in higher weight loss than lap band surgery
- Before deciding on getting vertical sleeve WLS, know that this procedure requires drastic lifestyle changes to achieve life-long weight loss success.
- Immediately after the surgery, the patient will be put on a healthy gastric sleeve diet that should be strictly followed to achieve the weight loss target.
- With the help of regular exercise, people can expect to lose up to 60 to 70% of their excess weight within a two-year period
